Impregnated Activated Carbon
Impregnated activated carbon, in both standard and custom sizes, is designed for applications where untreated carbon may not be effective. Through surface impregnation, activated carbon is chemically modified with a fine distribution of chemicals and metal particles within its pores. This process enhances the carbon’s adsorptive capacity, creating a synergistic effect that significantly improves its ability to remove specific impurities from gas streams, which would otherwise be difficult or impossible to capture.
It is widely used in water treatment for its antimicrobial and antiseptic properties, especially in domestic and industrial filtration systems. Silver-impregnated carbon is particularly effective in preventing bacterial growth, making it ideal for water purification. In gas purification, impregnated carbon is used to treat flue gases in coal-fired power plants and other industrial air pollution control systems. It can be specifically impregnated to target acid gases, mercury, ammonia, amines, aldehydes, radioactive iodine, and inorganic gases like arsine and phosphine. For more specialized applications, carbon impregnated with metal oxides can target gases like hydrogen cyanide (HCN), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and others.
The customization of impregnated activated carbon allows for the targeted removal of specific contaminants, optimizing its performance. By varying raw materials, impregnation techniques, shape, and size, manufacturers can tailor the carbon to suit particular applications, maximizing its efficiency, lifespan, and pressure drop characteristics. Depending on the application, impregnated carbon operates through chemical adsorption, catalytic reactions, or a combination of both, enhancing its effectiveness for specialized purification needs.
